Staying safe on the roads when daylight is short
January driving can be really hard work. You set out in the dark, you drive home in the dark. In between the roads are wet, shiny, and full of potholes and other sneaky surprises.
Safe driving in the winter gloom involves more than simply switching on your headlights. There’s the glare of a low sun in your eyes, wet grime thrown up off the road, blinding oncoming headlights, and cars that aren’t always up to scratch because life’s short and car maintenance ends up at the end of the list.
You’ll not be surprised to hear us say that not keeping up with your basic maintenance is when little problems start causing big headaches!
Why shorter days cause car problems
Driving in December and January has hazards that just don’t exist on balmy summer nights. The winter sun sits low, headlights bounce off wet tarmac, and your eyes are constantly working overtime.
Add rain, fog, or drizzle and it can be tricky to judge distance and allow enough space for your vehicle to stop safely. Pedestrians, cyclists, and electric scooter cowboys wearing all black seem to appear out of nowhere. Even road markings can vanish on greasy roads.
A lot drivers don’t realise quite how much harder their car has to work in these conditions.
Headlights do more than you think
Your headlights and other exterior lights are absolutely indispensible when you’re driving in the dark. Not to mention a legal requirement. They don’t just help you see the road, they help everyone else see you.
Common things we spot all the time:
- One headlight out and the driver hasn’t noticed.
- Headlamps so cloudy they’re barely lighting the road.
- Headlights pointing too high and dazzling everyone coming the other way.
From behind the wheel everything might look fine but from the outside, it often isn’t. We strongly recommend you take 2 minutes to check all around your vehicle to make sure your lights are in full working order.
If your lights look dim, uneven, or one’s not working, get it sorted. It’s a simple fix most of the time and you avoid the risk of being pulled over.
Rear lights matter just as much
A lot of people forget about the back of the car. In winter rain and spray, rear lights are what stop the car behind running into you.
Brake lights not working properly mean less warning for other road users when you are slowing down. On wet roads, that’s the last thing you want.
Again, it’s a quick check that can save a lot of hassle and keeps you safe on the roads. You’ll need a buddy to give you the thumbs up to say both brake lights are working.
Windscreens and wipers make a huge difference
Driving in the dark with a smeary windscreen is absolutely knackering. Oncoming headlights turn into blinding blobs and every streetlight has a dazzling corona.
Old wipers won’t do much more than smear water and muck from the road across your windscreen in stripes. And a dirty windscreen inside makes it even worse.
Fresh wiper blades and a proper clean inside and out can transform night driving. Cleaning the inside of your windscreen is one of the easiest wins going, so grab a chamoise and give it a good clean today.
Tyres and grip when the road is shiny
Wet winter roads don’t forgive poor tyres. When you’re driving in the dark you’ve got less time to react, so grip really matters.
Low tread, wrong pressures, or cheap tyres can make braking and cornering feel vague and unpredictable.
If the car doesn’t feel planted or the steering feels odd on wet roads, don’t ignore it. That’s your tyres talking to you.
Tiredness sneaks up on you at night
Night driving after a long day is tiring, even if you don’t realise it. Your reactions slow and your attention can drift while you drive. This leaves you open to making mistakes that could end up in a serious road traffic situation.
Even though you’re probably in a hurry to get home, slow things down. Leave more space. Give yourself more time. And, most importantly, get home safe.
No automated safety system beats an alert driver.
A quick winter night driving check
Before you spend weeks driving in the dark, it’s worth checking:
- All lights work properly and are bright.
- Headlights are clear and aimed correctly.
- Wipers clear the screen cleanly.
- Washer fluid is topped up with winter mix.
- Tyres have decent tread and correct pressures.
These are small things that only take a few minutes to check, but they make a big difference.
