Headlight dazzle and road safety: How to adjust your lights and drive safely at night

Headlight dazzle is a growing issue on UK roads, with many drivers struggling against glare from modern LED lights, misaligned beams, and high-intensity lamps.

Driving at night can already be challenging, but if your headlights are too high or misaligned, they can make the road even more dangerous. For you and for everyone else. Making sure your headlights are properly positioned is essential for road safety.

If they’re aimed too high, you risk dazzling oncoming traffic. If they’re too low, your visibility is reduced, making night driving even more difficult. Here’s how to adjust your headlights correctly and drive safely at night.

Why incorrectly positioned headlights are a hazard

Headlights that are misaligned or set too high cause two major problems:

  1. They blind oncoming drivers – If your headlights are angled incorrectly, they can shine directly into the eyes of other road users, creating dangerous glare and increasing the risk of accidents.
  2. They reduce your own visibility – If your lights are pointing too low, you won’t get the full benefit of your headlights, limiting your ability to see hazards in time to react.

Regularly checking your headlights ensures they’re working as they should, providing the right amount of illumination without dazzling others.

Check your headlights from outside your car

From inside your vehicle, you may not be aware that you are guilty of headlight dazzle. A quick way to see if your headlights are misaligned is to park on a level surface, switch them on, and stand in front of your car.

Look at where the beams are hitting. If one is noticeably higher or they’re pointing too far upwards, they need adjusting so you don’t inadvertantly dazzle other road users at night.

You can also check their height by looking at how they hit the vehicle in front of you when driving. Your headlights should not shine above the number plate of the car in front when driving on level ground. If they do, they’re set too high and could be dazzling other drivers.

How to adjust the headlights from inside your car

You can most likely fix headlight dazzle from inside your vehicle. Most modern cars allow you to manually adjust headlight positioning. Here’s how to find the controls and make sure your lights are set correctly:

1. Locate the headlight adjustment controls

These are usually inside the car, positioned near the dashboard or to the right of the steering wheel. They may be numbered from 0-4, allowing you to tilt your headlights up or down.

The setting for a normal load in the vehicle is 0. You can adjust this up the more weight there is in the rear of the car.

2. Adjust for extra weight in the car

If you’re carrying a heavy load in the boot or have extra passengers in the back, your car’s rear will sit lower, naturally tilting your headlights upwards. Before driving, lower your headlights using the adjustment dial to prevent dazzling oncoming traffic.

0 is the normal setting and 4 is the low setting for when the back of the car is weighed down due to heavy load such as extra passengers in the back or heavy load in the boot.

3. Check and adjust for weather conditions

Fog, heavy rain, and snow can reflect headlight beams back at you, reducing visibility. In fog, use dipped headlights instead of full beam to avoid creating extra glare.

When to replace headlight bulbs

Even if your headlights are correctly aligned, old or dim bulbs can make night driving unsafe. Signs that your bulbs need replacing include:

  • Flickering or uneven light output – This indicates a failing bulb.
  • A yellow or dim glow – Over time, halogen bulbs lose brightness.
  • One headlight is noticeably dimmer than the other – This suggests one bulb is wearing out faster or there may be a faulty electrical connection that needs assessing..

For maximum visibility, replace both bulbs at the same time even if only one has failed. This ensures you get an even light output.

Your MOT covers headlight checks – book early!

Headlight alignment is checked as part of your MOT, so it’s important to keep them in good condition. If your lights are misaligned or not working properly, your car could fail its test.
