How To Jump Start a Car Battery

Ever wondered how to jump start a car? Watch our simple video guide and see Justin in action in our Leicester garage as he demonstrates how to jump start a dead battery.

When To Jump Start A Car

We’ve all been there! It’s all too easy to leave your headlights on over night and come to dead car battery the next morning. Maybe you simply have a car that doesn’t move much. Not to mention lockdown which has dragged on and on, meaning your car probably hasn’t been driven as often as it would normally.

All of this is punishing for your car battery. Unnecessary power drains and long periods of inactivity can result in your needing to jump start a dead battery.

Using Traditional Jump Leads

Avoid cheap supermarket jump leads. These are often made from aluminium which doesn’t conduct enough charge to jump start a car. Buying cheap supermarket jump leads is definitely a false economy.

A good set of jump leads will cost you around £30-40 and should be copper wires not aluminium. Aluminium wire is a poor conductor, has a greater resistance and the electricity simply doesn’t flow as well. You’ll pay more for the copper cord jump leads, but they’re a good investment.

Using a Portable Car Jump Starter

The down side of using traditional jump leads is that you’ll always need another car battery to provide the power.

Fortunately, there is now a fantastically useful tool on the market called a portable car jump starter. This is a power pack that you can keep in your car and doesn’t need you to find another vehicle for a jump start.

An added bonus is that portable car jump starter power packs often come with USB inputs, so you can use them to charge your phone too.
