Car care tips before driving home for Christmas

Driving Home for Christmas

Lockdown Christmas and Safe Motoring

We’re heading for the close of a very trying year where we’ve all been stuck in or around our homes. But 2020 is almost over! Thankfully we’re in for a brief respite to visit family over Christmas – within the 3 household limit of course.

Driving Home This Christmas

If your family live further afield and you’re driving home for Christmas, then your car might need some TLC. Many of us haven’t used our cars for some time and this can cause problems.

Preparation is key if you’re planning a journey of any length this Christmas. We’ve listed some simple checks you can run yourself before you travel. Alternatively, we can offer either a very quick pre-journey check or the Good Garage Scheme 21 Point Seasonal Check. Call today or use our contact form to book in.

What to Check Before You Hit the Road This Christmas

Screen wash and wiper blades

Visibility is extremely important in bad weather and poor light so make sure you can see. These are so simple to check but absolutely crucial to your safety on the roads. Always make sure your screen wash is topped up and your wiper blades are in good condition.

Tyre pressure and tyre condition

The condition of and pressure in your car’s tyres have a huge impact on the handling and roadworthiness of your vehicle. A good check for tyre wear and cracking can be all that’s needed to prevent a motorway blowout. For details of how to check your car’s tyres, read our car tyre care blog.

Oil check

Oil is the lifeblood of your engine, so don’t let it run low. Without sufficient oil in the engine the moving metal parts start to rub together and overheat. Checking the oil level of your engine is extremely simple, although a little dirty so don’t wear your Sunday best! If you’re not sure how to do this, we have step-by-step instructions with photos on our oil check blog.

Water anti-freeze level and concentration

This stops the engine from freezing when the temperature drop. There’s a simple tool you can buy to test this yourself, but we do this as standard with any car service or as part of our Good Garage Scheme 21 Point Seasonal Check.

Good Garage Scheme 21 Point Seasonal Check

Whether you’re going on a long trip or not, it’s still good to give your vehicle some attention as the seasons change. Going into winter, a good car maintenance reference guide is our Winter car maintenance essentials blog. These 4 car maintenance tips are invaluable for keeping your car in good condition.

We also offer the Good Garage Scheme 21 Point Seasonal Check. This is a comprehensive vehicle check by our motor engineers. This winter check will give you peace of mind that your car is ready for winter driving, even if you regularly maintain your car. Call today or use our contact form to make an appointment.
