When the temperature rises, your car feels it too. And while we often think about packing sun cream and sunglasses, the heat can quietly take a toll on your vehicle without you realising.
If you’re planning a summer road trip or just trying to get through your daily commute without the stress of a breakdown, here’s what you need to know about driving in hot weather.
6 things you need to know about driving in hot weather
1. Your coolant system is doing the heavy lifting
Your engine generates a huge amount of heat in any weather conditions. In summer, your coolant system has to work even harder to keep things under control. If your coolant level is low, it won’t take much to tip your engine into overheating.
What to do:
- Check your coolant level before setting off.
- Only top up when the engine is cool.
- Keep an eye out for any dashboard warning lights.
If your temperature gauge starts creeping up while you’re driving, pull over safely, switch off the engine, and let it cool.
Don’t try to open the radiator cap while the engine’s hot – the pressure could cause scalding steam to escape.
2. Tyre pressure isn’t just a winter worry
Driving in hot weather causes the air in your tyres to expand. If you haven’t checked your tyre pressure in a while, you could be driving on overinflated tyres without realising. That affects grip, handling, and wear.
Worse still, it increases your risk of a blowout.
What to do:
- Check tyre pressures when the tyres are cold.
- Use your manufacturer’s recommended figures.
- Don’t forget the spare.
Also check for worn or cracked rubber. Heat can speed up wear, especially if your tyres are already on the way out.
Taking care of your car’s tyres is incredibly important. Find out more in the Motor Maintenance Essentials: Car Tyres post.
3. Battery issues don’t just strike in winter
Many people associate battery failure with cold starts in winter. But summer can be just as punishing. High temperatures cause battery fluid to evaporate, which can lead to corrosion or internal damage.
What to do:
- If your battery is over 3 years old, get it tested.
- Watch for signs like sluggish starts or dim headlights.
- Book a check-up if you’re unsure.
If your car’s battery is on its last legs, a long journey in the heat might be what finally finishes it off.
4. Air con isn’t a luxury – it’s safety equipment
When you’re stuck in traffic with the sun beating down, a working air conditioning system isn’t just about comfort. It can stop drivers becoming fatigued, agitated, or distracted behind the wheel.
What to do:
- If the air isn’t coming out cold, your system might need re-gassing.
- Strange smells could indicate mould or bacteria in the vents.
- Make sure fans and blowers are working properly.
A short visit to the garage could make a long drive much more pleasant (and safer).
5. Watch what you leave in the car
On a hot day, the inside of your car can heat up like an oven. Plastic, electronics, food, and even sunglasses left on the dash can be damaged or become a hazard.
What to do:
- Never leave pets or people inside a parked car.
- Don’t leave aerosols, batteries, or phones in direct sunlight.
- Store items in the glovebox or boot if needed.
Use a windscreen sunshade if your car is parked for a long time, and crack a window slightly if it’s safe to do so.
6. Plan for delays and emergencies
Heat can slow you down – whether that’s roadworks, traffic, or your car itself struggling with the temperature. Make sure you’re prepared if your journey takes longer than expected.
What to do:
- Carry extra water for you and your passengers.
- Keep sunglasses to hand to reduce glare.
- Make sure your phone is charged and you’ve got a car charger.
If you’re heading on a longer journey, a quick pre-trip check at the garage could save you hours on the hard shoulder later.
