Why you need an up to date MOT and how set automatic reminders
We’ve had quite a few people through the doors lately who’ve completely forgotten their annual MOT date. Some only by a week or two, others by months.
It’s so easily done! Life gets busy, paperwork gets ignored, and before you know it, you’re driving around without realising there’s a problem.
The trouble is, an expired MOT can cause a lot more hassle than you expect so it’s important to keep on top of it all. Let’s look at what an MOT is actually for, why it matters, and how to make sure you never forget it again.
What is an annual MOT for vehicles?
An MOT is you mandatory yearly safety and roadworthiness check for cars that are three years old or more. It’s there to make sure your vehicle meets the legal minimum standards to be on the road.
During your annual MOT, things like brakes, tyres, steering, suspension, lights, emissions, seatbelts, and visibility all get checked. It’s not about how nice your car looks or whether it drives perfectly. It’s about safety.
Think of the MOT as an annual basic health check for your car. It’s there to spot issues that could put you, your passengers, or other road users at risk. It’s not the same as a full service which is a much more in-depth health check. But your MOT will catch the legal essentials for roadworthiness.
Why an up to date MOT really matters
An MOT isn’t just a formality. If your MOT has expired, your car isn’t legally roadworthy.
There are 2 really important reasons to keep your MOT up to date:
- First, you can be fined if you’re caught driving without one.
- Second, and this is the big one that catches people out, no MOT usually means no insurance.
So if you’re involved in an accident and your MOT has run out, your insurer may refuse to pay out. That’s a serious risk to take over something that’s easy to stay on top of.
If you want a proper overview of what’s checked, you can find more details on our MOT service page.
You don’t need to wait until it expires
A common mistake we see is people waiting until the exact MOT expiry date to book it in. You don’t need to do that, and you really shouldn’t – and not just because you might struggle to find a garage that can fit you in.
You can have your MOT done up to one month minus one day before it expires and still keep the same renewal date for the following year. That gives you a nice bit of breathing space if anything needs sorting and avoids the last minute panic.
Leaving it until the final day is how people end up stuck off the road or accidentally driving illegally. If you don’t fancy that, get yourself booked in a few weeks before the expiry date.
How to check when your MOT is due
If you’re not sure when your MOT runs out, the DVLA makes it simple.
You can check your MOT date and full MOT history using the official DVLA MOT checker tool. All you need is your registration number. It’s a really handy tool if you’ve ever typed “is my car taxed and MOT’d” into Google.
Set an MOT reminder so you don’t forget again
Relying on memory is where most people come unstuck. The easiest fix is to set up a reminder and let someone (or something!) else do the remembering for you.
The DVLA offers a free MOT reminder service by email or text. It takes just a few seconds to set up and it’s well worth the time investment!
We also offer MOT reminders through the Good Garage Scheme. Quite a few of our customers use this, but you do need to ask us to set it up. We’re more than happy to do that for you.
Once it’s set, you’ll get a nudge when your MOT is coming up instead of a nasty surprise.
What if your MOT has already expired?
If you’ve realised your MOT has run out, don’t panic. Just stop driving the car and get in touch.
You’re legally allowed to drive to a pre booked MOT appointment, but only for that reason. No popping to the shops or taking a detour. Straight there and straight back.
If you’re unsure what applies to your situation, give us a call and we’ll talk you through it.
A small job that saves a lot of hassle
Keeping on top of your MOT is one of those small admin jobs that saves a lot of stress later. Book it early, set a reminder, and deal with any advisories before they turn into bigger problems.
