Common AdBlue problems and how to fix them

In this post we talk about some of the most common AdBlue problems, how to spot them, and what to do about them.

What is AdBlue?

AdBlue is used to reduce nitrous oxide emissions from diesel fuelled vehicles. It works by injecting small amounts of AdBlue into the catalytic converter of your diesel car or van. This converts most of the nitrous oxide into water.

AdBlue consists of two ingredients: urea and deionised water. Isn’t chemistry amazing?!

Newer diesel vehicles that are compliant with Euro 6 Emissions Regulations will be equipped to use AdBlue. They have a separate tank, usually with a blue top, and usually located next to the diesel filler.

Avoiding common AdBlue problems

1. Only put AdBlue in the AdBlue tank

Firstly, only put AdBlue in the AdBlue tank. Any contamination in your AdBlue can cause a wide variety of issues with the workings of your engine. If you accidentally put diesel in the AdBlue tank do not start your car. Seek mechanical help immediately.

2. Don’t let your AdBlue run out

One way to avoid AdBlue problems is to make sure you don’t run out. You should get a dashboard notification when your AdBlue is running low. Don’t ignore it!

If it runs out completely, the next time you turn your car off, you won’t be able to restart the vehicle until the AdBlue levels are restored. Needless to say this can be highly inconvenient if you’re nowhere near a garage selling AdBlue.

3. Preventing AdBlue crystallisation

Cars which are used infrequently are prone to another kind of AdBlue problem: crystallisation. This is happens because the catalytic converter needs driving time to reach optimum temperature. Only when it reaches the right temperature will the chemical reaction with the AdBlue work properly.

This leaves unused AdBlue in the catalytic converter which then evaporates and crystallises in the system. These crystals cause blockages which can damage the catalytic converter and other exhaust components in your vehicle.

You can avoid the crystallisation problem by using one of the additives now on the market. We will be stocking Forte Exhaust Crystal Preventer from November 2022.
