When to replace your car’s pollen filter

Did you know your car has a pollen filter and that it should be replaced regularly? No? Read on and we’ll answer all the questions you never knew you had (about pollen filters).

What is it and what does it do?

Any car with air conditioning will have a pollen filter.

It is designed to filter pollen (no kidding!), dust, exhaust fumes, and any other contaminants out of the air. This will keep the air inside your car clean, fresh, and breathable.

The pollen filter also stops the heater and air conditioning elements from getting blocked up with airborne contaminants. Any blockages reduce the working efficiency of the heater and air conditioning.

This build up of detritus is also what can make your air conditioning start to smell a bit funny over time.

When to change the pollen filter in your car

Because a working pollen filter is an important part of your car’s air conditioning, it needs to be replaced regularly.

So, how do you know when it needs changing? Here are a couple of indications that it has stopped working properly and needs replacing:

  1. If your air conditioning has started smelling a bit funny, then there’s a good chance your pollen filter will need changing.
  2. The demister in your car stops working as well as normal. This is related to the air flow in the car. If the pollen filter is all clogged up and needs replacing, then the airflow will be reduced and the demister won’t work as well.

Other than these two indicators, you might not be aware that your car’s filter has reached the end of its useful life and needs replacing.

Fortunately, we check the pollen filter as part of your regular service when you bring your car to VFR Motors.

Not all garages will bother changing the pollen filter because it can be tricky to get to in certain car models. We think it’s an important part of keeping your car in efficient working order, so we always check, no matter how inaccessible it is.
