How to check your last MOT date

Knowing your MOT date is a really important part of owning a vehicle. Your car or van is legally required to have an annual check to make sure that it is safe to drive on the road.

In this post we look at:

  • Why you need a valid MOT
  • How to check your last MOT date
  • When you should take your car for a test
  • 2 services where you can set an automated reminder

Why you need a valid MOT

A car over 3 years old is legally required to have a valid MOT to drive on the road.

There is no longer a grace period for the previous year’s MOT. If your MOT is out of date or your car fails any of the tests, it must be fixed immediately.

You cannot legally drive the vehicle on the road. The only exception is to take your car to pre-booked MOT or repair appointment.

You should also be aware that an out of date MOT means that:

  • If you have an accident without a valid MOT you’re not insured.
  • You can be fined up to £1,000 for driving without a valid MOT.

When do I need to take my car in for a test

At time of writing, vehicles need to be tested annually. It has been suggested that the MOT frequency be changed to a mandatory test every two years.

Based on our experience of the vehicles that come through the garage for MOT, we’d see this as a false economy for motorist. Keeping on top of small repairs extends the life of the car.

Missing a small repair one year can turn into something far more serious and expensive after another 12 months has passed.
